Hot Yoga on Crowfoot

  • Location: Hot Yoga on Crowfoot (HYC), 88 Crowfoot Terrace NW, Calgary (map)
  • Studio is heated. 105 degrees Fahrenheit with 50% humidity
  • Style: Baptiste Power Vinyasa Flow, Traditional Hatha, Yin/Yang and Union (Baptiste and Traditional combination) classes offered
  • Instructors: I have attended a number of classes at HYC with my most recent being with Delaney Hobbs (there is currently no bio for Delaney but you can check out the other instructors)
  • Schedule:  Most frequently alternating between their Baptiste Power Vinyasa and Traditional Hatha classes, classes are offered throughout the day from 6:00am and 10:15pm, varying between 60 mins & 75 mins. Check out their schedule online.
  • Price: Single drop in is $17 (standard for the Calgary area) with many other unlimited and punch type passes available. HYC offers a initial week unlimited for $25 for first time students and is affiliated with Hot Yoga on 17th, with passes being transferable between the two locations.

Experience:
Overall, my experience with Hot Yoga on Crowfoot was good. The studio is in Crowfoot Crossing and has a nice bright feel when you walk in. The small storefront is deceiving as the studio extends back quite a ways and includes both a hot yoga studio as well as a spin studio. I was pretty early for my class and greeted with smiles by both Delaney and another yogi behind the counter as I entered and signed in. I could hear the music bumping from the spinning room as I made my way to the change room, but once I entered the hot studio I was met with a calm and quiet environment where I could peacefully take a few minutes to center myself before Delaney came in to start the class.

The sequencing of the Baptiste Vinyasa Flow class is fairly consistent from day to day with each instructor adding in a little spice of their own here and there with a consistent Vinyasa foundation. There are minimal inversions taught in these classes with a focus on standing foundation postures such as Virabhadrasana 1 & Virabhadrasana 2, along with balancing postures including Vrksasana and Garudasana. These classes are also set to music, and individual teachers will play anything from laid back folk & Kirtan to top 40 tracks.

My practice with Delaney started with the core sequence (always a part of the Baptiste Flow but with varying sequences placed at different points in the class depending on instructor preference) which I thought might do me in and exhaust me for the rest of the practice, I mean I was hardly even used to the heat yet! I was pleasantly surprised when I not only warmed up and got energy flowing right away but also felt strong and centered through my core for the entirety of the 75 mins. While it was a Vinyasa class, the first few cycles were taken much more slowly to help build the foundation for beginners before starting to move with the breath and there was constant cuing throughout the class to help lead those newer to the Asana practice.

Delaney had a laid back style of teaching, and had a nice way of given gentle alignment reminders just as I needed them. There was a lot awareness on the breath, both in terms of working with Ujjayi breath and big releasing sighs to help release any excess heat and tension.  By the end of the class, I was tired, but feeling detoxed and strong, and felt great for the rest of the day!

I’m drawn towards a teacher who can laugh and create a safe, fun environment. I have also found much needed balance in my practice (and life!) with meditative yin-style practices that interweave subtle energy work.
