Yoga in the East Village

Every Tuesday starting at noon Calgary’s East Village is sponsoring a FREE hour long yoga class taught by Anita Athavale. It’s a wonderful initiative to bring yoga to the community, get people outside and away from their desk.

Deets:

  • Location: East Village Pavilion- 618 Confluence Way SE, Calgary, AB (see map)
  • Studio is outdoors. Check their event page on Facebook if you’re skeptical about the weater.
  • Style of yoga: Vinyasa Flow, Iyengar combo with a focus on alignment
  • Class length: 60 min
  • Schedule: Every Tuesday at noon (12:00 PM) starting May 7 until September 3
  • Price: Free!

Experience:

Such a glorious feeling to be doing sun salutations, in the sun, in Calgary’s East Village.

The class takes place on the deck of the East Village pavilion directly facing the Bow river. Anita Athavale is scheduled to teach these classes for the second year in a row and contributes her brevity and extensive yoga knowledge. Anita is an expert in providing hands on adjustments (if that’s your thing) and creating a fun, light atmosphere.

The class is meant for all levels with some optional, more advanced, variations for those that want to take it to the next level. It also aims to provide a moderate workout with some core and arm balances added to the practice. When we got flowing it  brought my heart rate up a bit despite my desire to lay in savasana and soak up the sun. Ultimately it’s intended to be a break – get your heart pumping, cool down and lay out in the sun. What could be better than that?

If you’re want more info or wish to register check out their Facebook event page.

I have been “seriously” practicing yoga for almost 4 years, meaning I go about 2-3 times per week to one studio or another. I live in Calgary, Alberta, Canada and I like to spend my free time traveling around this planet (or as much as my resources allow me to). When I do travel I enjoy checking out new studios and hope to communicate to you guys what I learned in the process.

My “style” of yoga can be characterized by a few key words: anatomical, foundation, avoiding warrior poses and arm balances. My favorite teachers are: Jeff Mah, Tiffany Cruickshank and Kathryn Budig. If you are familiar with any of these teachers you’ll know that I like to get my heart pumping and flow through Asana’s.
